The 1968 Highland Green Ford Mustang GT Fastback

Daily writing prompt
What is your all time favorite automobile?

This is such a movie nerd thing for me to say. I’m not even a car guy. I believe fully that a car is meant to just get you from point A to point B, with some stops at point A1/A2/A3 in between if needed. The best car I’ve ever driven was a 2022 Corolla Hybrid that my mom rented from the Burbank airport. It was smooth, responsive, sleek, no fuss. Everything I want in a car.

But then I watched the movie Bullitt. The Steve McQueen classic from 1968. The way that car looks in that movie flying up and down the inclined streets of San Francisco cannot be beat. The way McQueen looks standing next to that car – cannot be beat. Yes, McQueen was a cool sexy action hero and had been for quite a while before this particular movie was made, but I’d like to think that anyone – including me – could look sexy standing next to that car.

I know it’s totally a guy thing to like a muscle car, that too for no reason whatsoever. But I don’t car. I’m not really the machismo kind of guy in any other area of my life, so I reserve the right to have that personality here. I would like to think that Vin Diesel and the Fast and Furious franchise also inspired these thoughts. I could do without how loud they get, but man do they look cool. I suppose it would be a waste to have a car like this just to drive to the supermarket (where are you going to put everything anyway?) but as just…something to own? THAT is a dream.

I know nothing of the specs. I couldn’t tell you how much horsepower that car has, how fast it gets to 60mph, how many miles to the gallon it gets. All I know is when I have enough money to buy that car – I’m buying it. Or leasing it. That exact year, that exact color – it’s mine. Okay, I just googled it and saw that the original car went for 3.74 million dollars at auction. So it might be a while! But I will be warming up space for that car in my eventual garage (just kidding, I’m a millenial! I’m never owning a house with a garage!) right next to my 2022 Corolla Hybrid.
