BEYONCE!!!
My first arena concert of my life was a big one. I woke up last Tuesday and went on TikTok (as one does) and saw a post that said that Beyonce tickets were selling for abnormally cheap prices. The girl I’ve been dating is a big Beyonce fan, so I was of course interested. I log on to SeatGeek (or Ticketmaster or..whatever the fuck site. I don’t know this stuff okay?) and see that tickets were going for – I SHIT YOU NOT – $40. Not ALL tickets mind you. These were the cheapest tickets 3 rows from the top. But still! $40!! A steal. Bought them immediately. Didn’t even check to see if my date was available (thank God she was). And away we went last night!
What a great production. Again, this is my first arena concert I’ve ever been to so I have nothing to compare it to. But my god how intricate. The level of detail in so much of the show was inspiring. They gave us wristbands with lights that flashed on the beat of the song, which was crazy to see from our almost birds-eye view of the stadium. As for the queen herself? Well, she delivered. For a woman that’s had 3 kids and has been in this business for more than half her life, she can still put on a quality show. And I believe this was the 4th of 5 shows in LA? She looked phenomenal and the dancing was on point. I know she is basically a company unto herself and she has crazy resources in order to keep her looking fabulous but, the work ethic definitely showed through. Also props to Blue Ivy for her dance moves. What a crazy life that must be for her. Like this was a Wednesday night. When I was 13 I was spending my Wednesday nights very much indoors and probably avoiding homework to play video games. I definitely was not onstage at SoFi Stadium in front of tens of thousands of people.
The other thing that struck me about the show was the powerful imagery on the screens that showed the black experience through the history of country music. Neither me nor my date knew anything about the Cowboy Carter album or any of the songs but the message was felt for sure. It felt very unapologetic and I loved that.
Sidenote, speaking of live performances – I have been working on a Greek Marathon play for the past 5 months that is coming up on its final week of performances this weekend. Up until yesterday, it was the only live performance that I have seen since January. Rehearsing for a 5 hour epic about the Peleponnesian wars can take a lot out of you. I will write a longer post about it at another time but it has been one of the great joys of my life to do this 5 hour play with this group of people. My first foray into theater since high school and it’s the hardest play I’ll ever do. But honestly, what a delight!
If you’re in LA, this weekend is the last chance you have to watch us – https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/school-of-night/hellas
