As a millennial I barely think about this question because this question doesn’t apply to me unless I win some sort of lottery.
But I’ll give it a shot…
Whenever I think of a future home though, I think about a place that’s home to not just me but the community I keep. I think about a family living there, however big or small. I think about the rich aromas of multiple types of coffees that I rotate monthly. I would like it to be technologically advanced – automated to a degree. Nothing big, blinds go up and down at a pre-determined time, Nest thermostats making sure I don’t get too cold or hot.
I’d like a deck that gets ample sunlight with enough tree cover in the backyard to protect me from noise. A quiet place where I can go to write shitty blog posts like the one you’re currently reading. I’d like a home theater inside the house so at any given moment I can watch the movies I want to watch in the manner they were supposed to be watched (or fall asleep to a pretentious movie and tell people later on that I really liked it).
My ideal home has a big kitchen with a big long island and big ceilings. It needs a lot of space because I’m a terrible cook and I’ll need all the space I can to learn. Plus, I’m a gangly 6 foot tall guy, not the most graceful when you put pots and pans and heavy dishes in my hands. I have typically never been one for a big dining table so my living room/family room would have lots of trays/end tables to eat food off of comfortably.
I’d like enough bedrooms to accommodate those who lived in the house and any and all visitors that we could possibly have. A room for my mom, for my brother and his family, all the way down the line.
I’d like my house to create a sense of community that you really only get from NBC sitcoms from back in the day. The way that Kramer would drop in on Jerry, when Joey and Chandler would just stroll across the hall and hang out with the girls in Friends – I’d like to recreate that sense of community. I kind of live my life like that now, and that’s definitely something I’d love to maintain if I ever became a homeowner. If you’re part of my inner circle, you have a place at my table.
Honestly, that’s about it. I know it seems pretty simple and I’m probably leaving out some high-tech mumbo jumbo furniture that feeds you the newest TikTok meal while also wiping your ass, but I can always put that in my office.
